Diversity has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years – who’d a thought it eh’ it’s only 2019! But what does Diversity mean?
Most organisations now know the importance of a diverse workplace but quite often they don’t understand how to fully get there yet. We find the most common objection we come up against is ‘We’re too small to be diverse’ It’s not about the size of the company it’s about the potential growth of the company.
Diversity is about empowering individuals and embracing and appreciating their differences, this could be ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation, education status or age.
A diverse workplace is employing or being able to employ – well anyone really! It’s not all about having a 50-50 board and representation from everywhere. In an ideal world that would be great but unfortunately we don’t live in an ideal world. The pressure of trying to reach these ideals means, Diversity and Inclusion can sometimes just end up as another exercise in ticking boxes. It’s about seeing the value of Diversity in your workplace and what it can bring to your business. It’s training your employees, it’s about having the right policies in place and last but not least its about inclusion and making things in our own way better for everyone.
